Laptop Gift Puts Homeless Youth on Track to Graduate

This is a press release that was written and distributed by the Foster Coalition on behalf of One Simple Wish.

AUSTIN, TX, May 28, 2015 – When 18-year-old Gabriel recently left his foster home, his laptop and some other personal belongings were either lost or thrown away, and Child Protective Services (CPS) officials were unable to retrieve them.

Gabriel is a former foster child who currently lives in a homeless shelter. He has faced many hardships in his young life, but he is a driven young man who works two part-time jobs and attends school online. He’s on schedule to graduate from high school at the end of summer, and he dreams of someday attending college at the University of Texas.

“This incident really hurt Gabriel because he felt like no one cared about the things that were important to him,” said Sarah Bryant who is Gabriel’s attorney at the Texas Foster Youth Justice Project, “and his laptop is how he does his schoolwork. He needs it to graduate.”

Bryant listed Gabriel’s need for a laptop on, a website that allows people to grant wishes for foster children. That’s when an anonymous donor stepped in and fulfilled Gabriel’s wish of a new laptop on the same day that it was listed on the website.

“Unfortunately, it is not unusual for children's belongings to be lost as they move from one foster home to another,” said Danielle Gletow, founder of OneSimpleWish. “This new laptop shows Gabriel that someone not only cares about his lost items, but also cares about him.”
